Flexible Badges - Warranty, Durability and Expected Life

Learn about the durability of flexible metallic badges for police departments.

Smith & Warren has built its reputation by manufacturing traditional die-struck metal badges that are designed to last for decades. Many of those badges remain in service for generations and can be repaired, refinished, and restored throughout their life.

Flexible Metallic Badges are different.

They are designed to provide the most authentic appearance possible when a traditional metal badge isn't practical, but they are still a flexible product made from modern materials. Understanding what to expect will help you get the most value from your investment.

Built for Performance

Smith & Warren Flexible Metallic Badges are manufactured using multiple layers of advanced materials, including a durable TPU body, metallic finishes, and a laminated hook backing for use with hook-and-loop uniforms. This construction allows the badge to closely replicate the appearance of a traditional metal badge while remaining lightweight and flexible.

Like any product that is repeatedly worn, attached, removed, bent, washed, and exposed to the elements, flexible badges will eventually show signs of normal use.

What Is Normal Wear?

Over time, it is normal for a Flexible Metallic Badge to experience cosmetic wear. Depending on how frequently it is worn and the conditions in which it is used, you may eventually notice:

  • Wear to the metallic finish
  • Scratches or scuffs from everyday use
  • Reduced holding strength of the hook-and-loop attachment
  • General aging of the flexible materials

These changes are considered normal wear and tear and are an expected part of the product's life cycle.

How Long Will a Flexible Badge Last?

There is no single answer.

A badge worn every day on an active patrol uniform will naturally wear much faster than one used only occasionally for ceremonies or administrative duties. Some badges may need replacement after a year or two of heavy service, while others that receive only light use may remain in excellent condition for many years.

Because every department's usage is different, it is not possible to predict the exact service life of any individual badge.

Our Flexible Badge Warranty

Smith & Warren provides a one-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship for flexible badges.

If a flexible badge fails because of a manufacturing defect during the warranty period, we will repair or replace it in accordance with our warranty policy.

The flexible badge warranty does not cover:

  • Normal wear and tear
  • Cosmetic aging from regular use
  • Damage caused by misuse, abuse, or improper care
  • Lost badges

Unlike traditional die-struck metal badges, Flexible Metallic Badges cannot be refinished or restored once they become worn.

Plan for Replacements

Because flexible badges are wearable items, departments should expect to replace them periodically as they become worn, damaged, or lost.

We recommend ordering extra badges when placing your initial order and maintaining a small inventory for new personnel and replacements. Many departments also choose to issue more than one badge per officer so that a spare is available if one is misplaced or damaged.

Designed for the Real World

Smith & Warren's Flexible Metallic Badges provide the most authentic appearance available in a flexible badge, making them an outstanding choice for polos, outerwear, tactical uniforms, and other applications where a traditional metal badge cannot be worn.

While they are not intended to last a lifetime like a die-struck metal badge, they are designed to deliver years of professional appearance and dependable service when used as intended. By planning for regular replacements over time, departments can maintain a consistent, professional image while enjoying the unique benefits Flexible Metallic Badges offer.
