The term "metallic" indicates that it resembles metal in appearance, though it isn't actually made of metal. These badges have become a popular alternative to traditional patches and direct embroidery, offering a more authentic and professional look.

• Are Flexible Metallic Police Badges more affordable than direct embroidery?

  Yes, they are. High-quality direct embroidery can cost between $20 and $25 per garment, while one flexible badge can be transferred between multiple garments. Not only do flexible badges look better than embroidered badges, but they also offer significant cost savings for police departments.

• Are Flexible Metallic Police Badges more cost-effective than patches?

  While the initial cost of a flexible metallic badge is higher than a typical patch, it is more cost-effective in the long run. Flexible badges can be transferred between garments using a hook & loop attachment, meaning one badge can serve multiple uniforms. In contrast, patches are permanently sewn onto a single garment. Besides offering a more professional appearance than embroidered patches, flexible badges ultimately save money over time by reducing the need for multiple patches.

• Do flexible metallic badges replace real metal badges?

  No, flexible metallic badges do not replace real metal badges. The metal police badge is an iconic symbol of law enforcement and holds deep sentimental value throughout an officer's career. While metal badges are irreplaceable, flexible metallic badges offer a practical alternative to sewn-on patches or embroidery for uniforms like polo shirts or tactical vests where metal badges aren’t practical. These flexible badges closely replicate the look of metal badges, maintaining a professional appearance in situations where wearing a metal badge isn't feasible.

• Will a flexible badge set off a metal detector?

  No, flexible badges will not set off a metal detector, making them popular in corrections, event security, and court security settings.

• What are Smith & Warren Flexible Badges made of?

  Smith & Warren Flexible Badges are made from Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), a durable material known for its flexibility, strength, and resistance to abrasion, chemicals, oil, low temperatures, and water. With proper care, these badges can be worn for an extended period.

• Can my current metal badge be replicated as a Smith & Warren Flexible Badge?

  Almost any metal badge can be replicated as a Smith & Warren Flexible Badge using our advanced technology. While there are few limitations, we’ve successfully found solutions in cases where challenges arise. If you send us a picture of your badge, we can confirm whether it can be replicated as a flexible badge.

• Do you have a minimum order quantity?

  Yes, the minimum order quantity for new orders is 10 pieces. The order can include a mix of metal finishes, ranks, badge numbers, etc., as long as all badges come from the same mold. The minimum order quantity for re-orders is 5 pieces.  Smaller quantities are possible but may not be cost-efficient and can be quoted upon request.

• How do I care for my Flexible Metallic Badges to ensure they last?

  For badges with hook & loop backing, remove them before washing. If the badge is heat-sealed, turn the garment inside out and wash in water under 90°F. Air drying is recommended, but if using a dryer, select a low-temperature delicate cycle.

• Can Flexible Badges be dry cleaned?

  No, we do not recommend dry cleaning flexible badges.

• Can I iron a garment with a flexible badge attached?

  Yes, but avoid ironing directly over the flexible badge.

• Can Flexible Metallic Badges be exposed to high temperatures?

  Flexible Metallic Badges are designed to be worn on shirts, coats, outer carriers, and other uniform garments under normal environmental conditions. Under normal conditions suitable for wearing a uniform, temperature should not be a concern.

  
  Avoid prolonged exposure to temperatures above 122°F (50°C). At elevated temperatures, the molded TPU can soften and become more susceptible to warping or deformation. Excessive heat can also weaken adhesives used in the construction or attachment of the badge, including the adhesive securing the Hook & Loop backing. Temperatures inside a closed vehicle can become significantly hotter than the outside air, particularly in direct sunlight. Do not leave Flexible Metallic Badges in a hot vehicle or other high-temperature environment for an extended period of time.

  
  As a practical guideline, if the environment is safe for a person wearing the uniform, it is safe for the Flexible Metallic Badge. Prolonged exposure to excessive heat above 122°F (50°C) is outside normal use and may permanently damage the badge or its backing.

• What Backing Options do you Offer?

  Flexible Metallic Badge can be supplied with the following backing options:

• What is the Warranty?

  Warranty Terms:

  Flexible Metallic Badges are covered by a 1-year warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. The warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, misuse, improper care, damage caused by exposure to excessive heat or other conditions outside normal use, or work performed by garment decorators. While Smith & Warren provides guidance and technical support to decorators, we are not responsible for the quality or outcome of their work.

• Heat Press Instructions:

  (Do not remove the clear membrane until Step 6)

  1. Preheat: Preheat the platen and garment for 5 seconds.
  2. Position: Place the flexible badge on the garment using the tacky adhesive for positioning.
  3. Orientation: If using top heat, flip the garment so the adhesive faces the heat platen. If using bottom heat, do not flip.
  4. Protection: Place a 1/8" thick foam pad over the badge to protect it.
  5. Press:
     • Temperature: 300 to 320°F
     • Pressure: 30 to 35 PSI
     • Time: 15 to 20 seconds
  6. Remove Membrane: Tear off the clear membrane.

  Heat Press/Heat Seal Application Policy

  Smith & Warren®'s flexible metallic badges are designed with an adhesive backing and come with detailed application and care instructions. However, Smith & Warren® assumes no responsibility for the application process or any damage that may occur to garments before, during, or after application.

  Improper application may result in issues including, but not limited to, detachment, puckering, misalignment, insufficient adhesion, or adhesion in unintended areas. The effectiveness of adhesion may vary based on fabric type, heat press settings, and other external factors beyond our control.

  By purchasing and using our badges, you acknowledge and accept full responsibility for their application. Smith & Warren® shall not be held liable for any garment damage, improper adhesion, or performance issues resulting from the application process.

  For best results, we recommend testing the application on a sample fabric before full application.

• How long do you keep molds?

  Smith & Warren maintains each department’s flexible badge mold for 36 months following the most recent order. If no orders are placed during this consecutive 36-month period, the mold will be retired and removed from storage. If a new order is placed after the mold has been retired, a set-up fee may be required to produce a replacement mold.

• What metal finishes are available for flexible badges?

  We offer a wide range of metallic finishes, including all popular metals in shiny, matte, and antique options. Additionally, we provide special finishes for awareness campaigns, such as pink, blue, and autism awareness patterns.

• Do I need to send you my badge to make it into a flexible badge?

  No, you don't need to send us your badge. We just need a clear photo of your badge along with its height dimension. If needed, we may request additional pictures, but typically one good photo of the front is sufficient. If you use multiple finish combinations, it can be helpful to send a picture of a badge in each finish.

• Can I send in artwork, or do you need a photograph of our badge to create a flexible badge?

  We strongly recommend sending a photograph of the actual metal badge. While artwork can be similar, the final badge often differs from the design. When converting 2D artwork into a 3D badge, many changes occur. To ensure your flexible badge closely matches your metal badge, a photograph is the best option.

• If I prefer to send in my badge, can I?

  Yes, you can send us your badge if you prefer. While a photograph is usually sufficient, we can photograph the badge ourselves and replicate it. Your badge will be handled with care and returned to you with your order.

• What factors influence the cost of Smith & Warren Flexible Badges?

  The unit cost of a flexible badge varies based on size, quantity, and finish.

  • Size: Badges typically range from 2.5" to 3.5". A 3.5" badge costs about 20% more than a 2.5" badge.
  • Quantity: Quantity is the biggest cost driver, with substantial discounts for larger orders.
  • Finish: Costs increase with additional metallic finishes. Single-color badges are less expensive than two-tone or tri-tone options.

  Prices range from $30.00 to $60.00 for 10 pieces, $9.50 to $28.00 for 100 pieces, and $7.00 to $20.00 for 500 pieces.

• How much does a mold cost for a flexible badge?

  The cost for a mold is typically $250.00. If a 3-stage mold is required, the cost is $350.00. We will let you know if a 3-stage mold is necessary after reviewing a picture of your badge. The mold is a one-time investment, and we keep it for 36 months between orders. As long as you place an order for flexible badges at least once every three years, the cost of the mold will be a one-time investment .

• Can I purchase extra loops to sew onto my shirts?

  Yes, you can order extra loops. They will be die-cut to match the size of your flexible badge. Purchasing additional loops is a cost-effective way to maximize the use of your flexible badges.

• My badge is made of multiple layers. Can you duplicate a multi-layer badge, and will it still look 3-dimensional?

  Yes, our advanced technology can accurately replicate multi-layer badges, preserving the layered look you value. While the flexible badge will be slightly thinner than a metal badge, it will retain a 3-dimensional appearance and the visual depth of your original design.

• Can Flexible Badges be machine washed?

  It depends on the metallic finish of your badge.

  • Matte metallic finishes can be machine-washed. Turn the garment inside out and wash in water at a temperature of 90°F or lower. We recommend hang drying, but if using a dryer, select a low-temperature delicate cycle.
  • Shiny metallic finishes cannot be machine-washed. They must be removed from the garment before washing. Machine washing a shiny-finish badge may result in delamination.

  To help prevent damage, shiny finishes are only available with hook-and-loop backing, allowing for easy removal before washing. Matte finishes are compatible with all backing options, including heat press and 3M double-sided tape.
