From an AI Concept to a Full Custom Police Badge

The Red Wing Police Department came to Smith & Warren with a clear goal: create a badge that represented the community its officers serve and would remain meaningful for generations to come.

They also came with an AI-generated concept and plenty of questions about how to turn that image into a real, fully custom badge.

The concept gave our team a strong starting point. It established an oval badge shape, large areas for readable lettering, and a central landscape featuring the Mississippi River, the city of Red Wing, and He Mni Can–Barn Bluff.

Most importantly, it showed that the center of the badge would be used to tell the department’s story.

Not every detail had been resolved, but it did not need to be. The AI image helped Red Wing communicate the direction it wanted to pursue and gave us a valuable foundation for the conversation that followed.

The design began to take its full shape during the BadgeStudio consultation—the first step in our custom badge process.

At our initial consultation, representatives of the Red Wing Police Department spoke about its history, its relationship with the Mississippi River, the importance of local commerce, the Indigenous connection to He Mni Can–Barn Bluff, and its desire to create something that would truly distinguish the department.

Our team listened, asked questions, took notes, and brainstormed directly with the department. We discussed what they appreciated about the AI concept, which ideas they wanted to preserve, and which details they had struggled to represent accurately.

Throughout the consultation, we returned to the original image as a reference point. It helped us understand the department’s intentions, while the conversation revealed a much fuller story the finished badge could tell.

Our goal was never to replace Red Wing’s idea with our own. It was to understand the intent behind the concept, build upon it, and use our experience to bring its full potential forward.
 

He Mni Can–Barn Bluff was central to the department’s vision.

Its silhouette is distinctive, with an organic pattern of exposed rock, brush, trees, and vegetation. Red Wing had found it difficult to reproduce those recognizable characteristics through AI alone.

Once we agreed that the bluff should become a major focus of the design, our artists studied photographs of the actual landscape and illustrated it specifically for the badge. The goal was not simply to depict a bluff, but to create one that would be immediately familiar to the people who know Red Wing.

The surrounding scene was then developed to reflect the actual community rather than a generalized cityscape.

The Mississippi River creates the entry point into the badge’s central composition. The Eisenhower Bridge, industrial buildings, riverfront architecture, and a Mississippi riverboat connect the design to Red Wing’s geography, history, commerce, and longstanding relationship with the river.

These ideas were already present within the department’s original vision. BadgeStudio helped make them more accurate, connected, and visually complete.

The consultation also created opportunities to introduce meaningful details that had not appeared in the original concept.

As Red Wing spoke about the community, the bald eagle became a natural addition. Bald Eagles are often seen in Red Wing, making it a destination for bird watching and locally relevant. At the same time, the eagle carries a broader meaning associated with the United States: vigilance, strength, and protection.

The recognizable City of Red Wing logo was incorporated above the landscape, creating an immediate visual connection to the city.

The phrase “Mni Sota Makoce,” the Dakota-language phrase from which the name Minnesota is derived, was also placed within the scene. Its inclusion connects the badge to the state’s Indigenous history and the land and waters that define the region.

Even the four engraved panels evolved through the process. The large, readable areas established in the original concept were preserved, but their shape was refined to flow more naturally with the landscape and give the finished badge a more distinctive character.

Every detail carried meaning. BadgeStudio’s role was to bring those elements together with the balance, clarity, dimensionality, and structure required for a badge that could be manufactured and proudly worn.

The finished badge remains true to where the project began.

It preserves the oval form, riverfront setting, bluff, cityscape, and overall visual direction established by Red Wing’s AI concept. Through consultation, research, custom illustration, badge design, engineering, and manufacturing expertise, those original ideas became more accurate, cohesive, and meaningful.

Red Wing brought its vision, its knowledge of the community, and the story it wanted to tell. BadgeStudio brought the experience needed to translate that story into a lasting symbol.
