How Woodinville Fire & Rescue Designed a Custom Fire Badge

Woodinville Fire & Rescue wanted a custom badge that combined recognizable fire service traditions with imagery unique to its Pacific Northwest community. Through BadgeStudio, the department worked with Smith & Warren to develop those ideas into a badge with detailed, three-dimensional elements that could be visualized before production.

The result is a custom Maltese Cross badge that brings together department identity, regional landmarks, emergency medical symbolism, and traditional firefighting tools.

Designing a Badge Around the Department and Community

A fully custom badge gives a department an opportunity to tell a story that an existing badge model may not be able to communicate.

For Woodinville Fire & Rescue, that meant combining the traditions of the fire service with imagery connected specifically to the Pacific Northwest.

The badge uses the familiar Maltese Cross shape as its foundation while incorporating the Cascade Mountains and a hot-air balloon into the upper portion of the design. Together, these elements give the badge a sense of place and make the design recognizable as Woodinville's.

What Symbols Are Included in the Woodinville Fire & Rescue Badge?

Several custom elements were incorporated into the badge to represent the department's responsibilities and identity.

Custom Department Center Seal

At the center of the badge is a custom center seal featuring the Woodinville Fire & Rescue monogram.

Using a department-specific seal creates a strong focal point while adding another element that distinguishes the badge from a standard design.

Rod of Asclepius

The Rod of Asclepius represents the emergency medical and first-aid responsibilities performed by firefighters and EMS personnel.

Traditional Firefighting Tools

The opposite side of the badge features a fire scramble composed of a ladder, pike pole, and axe. These traditional tools represent the work, preparedness, and readiness associated with the fire service.

Combined with the department monogram, mountains, and regional imagery, these elements create a badge that reflects both what the department does and the community it serves.

Why 3D Visualization Matters in Custom Badge Design

One of Woodinville Fire & Rescue's goals was to create significant depth and sculptural detail throughout the badge.

That can be difficult to judge from a flat drawing alone.

Through the BadgeStudio design process, a custom badge progresses from an initial concept into increasingly detailed design deliverables. A 3D graphic render allows the department to see how raised and recessed areas, lettering, symbols, and other sculpted elements are intended to work together before the badge moves into manufacturing.

For a design like Woodinville's, the 3D stage was particularly important. It helped visualize how elements such as the Cascade Mountains, firefighting tools, center seal, and lettering would translate from artwork into a dimensional metal badge.

From Concept to a Finished Custom Fire Badge

Developing a fully custom badge is a collaborative process.

The department provides its ideas, history, symbols, reference images, and goals. Smith & Warren's design team then helps translate those elements into a badge that is both visually meaningful and manufacturable.

With BadgeStudio, departments can review the design as it progresses through concept artwork, color illustration, 3D visualization, and physical production samples before the final badge is approved.

For Woodinville Fire & Rescue, that process created a badge that maintains the recognizable traditions of the fire service while giving the department a design rooted specifically in its own identity and community.

Designing a Custom Badge for Your Fire Department

A custom fire badge can incorporate the landmarks, history, department symbols, traditions, and imagery that make your agency unique.

You do not need to have a finished badge design before beginning. Reference photographs, existing badges, department logos, rough sketches, historical materials, and even early concept images can help start the conversation.
