When designing your badge, there are several decisions to make in our step-by-step personalization process in VisualBadge. Each choice addresses the functionality and look of your badge. One of the choices is deciding whether your badge should be curved or flat. In this article, we explore the reasons that should influence your decision on the shape of your badge. Whether you choose a curved or flat badge, we want this to be an informed choice that matches your specific needs.

When do I select a flat badge?

Flat badges are ideal for carrying your badge in a wallet or ID case. Your flat badge will sit securely in a recessed wallet or ID case hand-cut specifically for your badge model. In VisualBadge, you will select either a wallet clip or glue-in attachment for your flat badge to securely mount the badge to your Smith & Warren wallet or ID case.

When do I select a curved badge?

On the other hand, curved badges are specifically designed to be worn on your chest, typically on a shirt or a jacket. The curve of your badge and the pin & safety catch attachment ensure a snug fit against your chest, minimizing movement and enhancing comfort during extended periods of wear.

For badges intended for use with a belt clip or neck chain holder, both curved and flat shapes are viable options. However, if you anticipate the need to also wear your badge on a shirt, opting for a curved shape with a pin & safety catch attachment is recommended. This gives you maximum flexibility to move your badge from a Smith & Warren leather belt clip or neck chain holder to your shirt as needed.

Understanding the Manufacturing Process

While the choice between a curved and flat badge ultimately depends on how you will use it, it's worth noting that all badges begin their journey as flat badges during the manufacturing process. If your design calls for a curved badge, an additional production step is introduced to achieve the desired shape.

Curving a badge involves a specialized tool known as a dapping tool. This tool exerts several tons of pressure to press the flat badge over a curved metal block, adding a distinctive curve. Curved badges are sometimes referred to as "dapped badges," a nod to the dapping tool responsible for curving the badge.
